There are some theories about the origin of the belief that the horseshoe protects against evil spirits and brings good luck, in the believing of Christians, St. Dunstan was asked by the Devil to hoof his shoe sole, St. Dunstan met the requirement, but caused him a pain so terrible, that he vowed to never go where he sees a horseshoe.

Another theory was that the horseshoe (iron being the symbol of Mars) counteract the power of Saturn (the god of witches). Since its shape is reminiscent of the crescent, the horseshoe is a symbol of fertility, more because it looks like two horns and signifies vitality. In the Celtic legend, it was also said that hanging a horseshoe at the door of the house could remove malicious magical beings,  because they were “allergic” to iron.
